Ocean Affairs Council Counselor Sung Hsin-chen led a delegation to attend the Circular Economy Expo held Sept. 17-19 in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, underscoring government commitment to international collaboration on global marine governance.

The exhibition drew over 500 enterprises, the OAC said. It added that the Taiwan pavilion, “Taiwan Ocean Circular Hub” featured nine local companies including a textile company that specializes in creating high-performance cloth and clothing using recycling fishing nets and a biotech company that produces low-carbon personal care products.

As Japan’s largest circular economy expo, the event also attracted representatives from Japanese central and local governments such as the Ministry of Environment, Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Environment and Saitama prefecture government. Taiwan technology for recycling ocean waste and public-private collaborative project models were of particular interest, the council added.

To further deepen industrial cooperation between Taiwan and Japan, the OAC held a seminar and an industrial matchmaking event, which drew major Japanese enterprises including Suntory, Chori and Kaneka. The OAC noted that it is committed to allocating further resources to marine industry innovation and multinational cooperation.

The OAC established the Marine Debris Recycling Coalition in 2021, which integrates government, industrial and research bodies. Since OAC Minister Kuan Bi-ling took office, she has actively encouraged cooperation with Japan, Indo-Pacific countries and the European Union. (POC-E)
